UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hello all,

I am trying to hit the internet from my unix box (sun 250e), but cannot reach any external IP addresses.

I've updated the hosts and resolv.conf files with what i assume is the right information, but nothing happens (after reboot). In the hosts file, i've entered the Router, PDC, and DNS server addresses...but nothing.

I'm a novice at the networking side of things, and could do with a pointer - or some reading material that will help too.

what error do you get? "no route to host"
? please post the output of :
ifconfig -a

and

netstat -r

check if all values from ifconfig -a are as expected (FLAGS=UP and RUNNING, MTU=1500 for ethernet, INET=IP address, NETMASK correct (255.255.***.0), BROADCAST correct, ETHER=ethernet address).

do you have a default router setup ?

check if you have a file called /etc/defaultrouter
It should contain the IP for your default router!
