Working with if and sed in UNIX

I have a text file containing multiple lines like

Code:
password="&test.";

password="xyz";

password='write some';

password="&testwrite.";

today='o1jan2017'd;

-----------------
------------------

I don't want to replace the string value which are starting with & for Password variable and I want to replace the string value which are not starting with & as dummy can you please write out to code to search the entire file.

Thanks,
Harsha

Hi, try something like this:
Code:
sed "s/\([\"']\)[^\"'&]*\1/\1xxxxxxxx\1/" file

Code:
password="&test.";

password="xxxxxxxx";

password='xxxxxxxx';

password="&testwrite.";

today='xxxxxxxx'd;

HI Scrutinizer,

Thanks for your inputs but the logic need to apply only for password string your logic is affecting for the rest of the variables,can you let me know any other way if you have in your mind.

password="&test.";

password="xxxxxxxx";

password='xxxxxxxx';

password="&testwrite.";

today='xxxxxxxx'd;

it seems today variable is also getting changed here i require the my date values need to present in the file.

Try this small adaption to Scrutinizer's fine proposal:
Code:
sed "/^password/ s/\([\"']\)[^\"'&]*\1/\1xxxxxxxx\1/" file
