How to grep/awk only particular field?

I have a file like this. I want to filter values for only the particular day.

Source file:
Code:
# cat /tmp/1
Name Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun
A      Y
B          Y
C                      Y
D                              Y
F      Y
G                   Y      Y
#

For ex:
I want to select only monday list. But if i use awk command like below it is selecting the 1st and second field. But for the second field it is selecting from all the rows.

Code:
cat /tmp/1|awk '{print $1,$2}'
Name Mon
A Y
B Y
C Y
D Y
F Y
G Y

Output should be:
For Monday:
Code:
Name  Mon
A      Y
F      Y

For Tuesday:
Code:
Name Tue
B     Y

Like this i want to filter for all the days. Please help.

With GNU awk 4 you can do this:
Code:
$ awk -v wd=2 '$wd~/[^ ]/{print $1, $wd}' FIELDWIDTHS="6 4 4 4 4 4 4" file
Name   Mon
A       Y
F       Y
$ awk -v wd=3 '$wd~/[^ ]/{print $1, $wd}' FIELDWIDTHS="6 4 4 4 4 4 4" file
Name   Tue
B       Y
$ awk -v wd=6 '$wd~/[^ ]/{print $1, $wd}' FIELDWIDTHS="6 4 4 4 4 4 4" file
Name   Fri
C       Y

Hi.

See also post #11 in thread Getting the lines with nth column non-null

It demonstrates a perl-based utility, colgrep, part of a collection of such utilities written in perl.

In your specific case, you would need to do extra work, such as formatting the input file using TABs, which could be more trouble than it is worth.

Best wishes ... cheers, drl

Would this do ( it won't work with two "Y" s in a row):
Code:
awk 'NR == 1 || (length()/4) == 2' file
Name Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun
A      Y
F      Y
