awk script for this

Hi,

I have an input file which looks like

Code:
12.00 ghhhh jjjjj
kkkk lllll
1.90 kkkkkklllll kl
jk
kl
2.000 kl jio opl

Is it possible to arrange all in one line corresponding for a number.

op file ---

Code:
12.00 ghhhh jjjjj kkkk lllll
1.90 kkkkkklllll kl jk kl
2.000 kl jio opl

Many thanks in advance

many thanks for the reply vgersh99.

But I realised that my input is little more complicated for the script that you suggested.

Let the input file is something like

Code:
12.00AM ghhhh jjjjj (ag 3.0)
kkkk lllll
1.90PM kkkkkklllll
kl (op 9.0 pl)
jk (----escaped) 90 kl new
2.000AM kl jio opl

The new output would be

Code:
12.00AM ghhhh jjjjj (ag 3.0) kkkk lllll
1.90PM kkkkkklllll kl (op 9.0 pl) jk (----escaped) 90 kl new
2.000AM kl jio opl

Thanks a lot

that's fine - it should work for this case as well.

try it.

Many thanks vgersh99.

could you please explain what you actually did here in this logic?

The code vgersh99 provided:
Code:
awk '{printf ((FNR>1 && /^[0-9]/)?RS:"" ) $0}END {print""}' myFile

uses the awk utility to run the awk commands:
  1. {printf ((FNR>1 && /^[0-9]/)?RS:"" ) $0} which runs for each line read from an input file calling the printf() function with a single argument that is the concatenation of two strings:
    1. the record separator (RS, which defaults to the <newline> character) if the line number within the current in put file is greater than 1 (FNR>1) and (&&) the first character on that line is not a digit (/^[0-9]/); or the empty string ("") otherwise, and
    2. the contents of the current input line without the trailing <newline> character($0), and
  2. END {print""} which prints a <newline> character after the last line in the last given input file,
with one input file to be processed (myfile).
Since the 1st (and only) argument given to the printf() function in this code is a format string, this is a little bit dangerous. If any lines in your input file contain backslash (\) or percent-sign (%) characters, the printf() function interprets those characters in the format string argument as requests to perform formatting functions. The following might be a little bit safer:
Code:
awk '{printf ((FNR>1 && /^[0-9]/)?RS:"" )"%s", $0}END {print""}' myFile

or more simply:
Code:
awk '{printf ((FNR>1 && /^[0-9]/)?"\n%s":"%s" ), $0}END {print""}' myFile

which behaves like vgersh99's script except the format string argument now contains a %s format specifier to print a string argument, and the contents of the current line are given as a 2nd argument to printf().
