renaming files
How can I rename files with .c to .cpp in my current directory and if any directory present in current directory system should descend in to that and checks ( find )....
tell me how to achieve this using find command and other if any?

how do I do if I want to change .c to .txt ?

I couldn't get about -I option for xargs command in man page, kindly explain that.

find . -type f -name "*.c" -print| sed 's/\.c//' | xargs -I {} mv {}.c {}.txt

Quote:

Defines in some versions of xargs the placeholder for the output of the former command, so you can use it in your command called by xargs, in this case move.
Some xargs have {} as default placeholders, but I just defined it explicitly just in case... It could be that you can just leave -I {} away in your version.

many thanks for this command and explanation.

I tried command like

find . -type f -name "*.c" -exec mv {} {}.bak \;

if I got file with the name first.c then it should rename to first.c.bak right but it removes file first.c file and then it creates file name called {}.bak
why it is happening? Any idea

Afaik -exec only evaluates one instance of {}, not two. Best check
