Unix Auditing.
I need to log or 'audit' any access to a shared directory which is stored on a NetApp appliance. I need to be able to 'prove' who has acessed the data in this directory at any time. I am just not sure how to do this. The systems that will be accessing this are Linux systems.

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

I'd send that request right back to NetApp.
If the directory were an NFS export from a linux system, I'd suggest inotify kernel module.

sandholm's right NetApp filers have an OS of their own so netApp are the best folk to talk to, I would have suggested using a proper Unix as an intermediary such as a Solaris machine which you could then use the BSM auditting on but you can't NFS export an NFS mounted filesystem!
