help in cut and moing a file

Hi All,

I am having 20 files with names like art_bg_11*

I want only fisrt 100 characters in ech file and want to omit all extra charactes

i tried

cut -c 1-100 art_bg_11* >> art_bg_11*

it gives 0 records .

Is there is any way to do this ???

I have written a script(below) to do this , is there any way some option in cut command to do this

#! /bin/ksh
for i in `ls art_bg_11*`
do
temp=$i
mv $i $i.bkup
cut -c 1-100 $i.bkup >> $temp
rm $i.bkup
echo $i has beed modified

i ain't sure what exactly you are trying to accomplish here.. but here is what i would suggest to do:

Code:
for file in `ls -1 art_bg_11*`
do
cut -c1-100 $file>temp
mv temp $file
done

#! /bin/ksh
for i in `ls art_bg_11*`
do
temp=$i
mv $i $i.bkup
perl -ne'$l=100-length($s);if($l<=100){ m/^(.{0,$l})/s;$s.=$1;} END{ print $s."\n"}' $i.bkup >> $temp
rm $i.bkup
echo $i has beed modified
done
