ftp files with directories

hi,

i am trying to ftp files from one server to another.

how do i do it with all directories.(i mean i need the same directory structure)

mget -r * doesnt seem to work properly..pls help.

Afaik the usual ftp command line clients do not support such a thing. Maybe you want to setup scp, in other words ssh, because it is encrypted and offers a recursive switch (-r).
Maybe tar'ing your stuff on the otherside first and ftp'ing it then is an option. Or maybe rsync...

how to do a tar

tar -c <folder_name> xx.tar gives me an error

tar: /dev/rmt0: The specified device does not exist.

You are missing the "-f":
Code:
man tar
tar -cvf <archivename> <all-stuff-to-be-tar'ed>
tar -cvf archive.tar somedir

I already suggested to read the man pages for tar. Change the c for create vs. x for eXtract.
