Configuring Linux box with the smtp mail server

Hi all,
I was trying to configure SMTP server with my linux box. I made changes to the /etc/mail/sendmail.cf whereby editing the line

DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=<port number>,Addr=<mail server name>, Name=MTA')dnl

after this ive created a new sendmail.cf file by using the command

m4 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc > /etc/mail/sendmail.cf

Everything has went fine till nw as when i try "ps -ef | grep sendfile" then i c the service to be running.

Now when i've tried sending a mail to a valid email Id, i'm nt getting it. command i used to send mail was "uuencode test.mail | mail "testing" <email_id>"

Can anyone help me out debugging it.

I'm not sure if the message sending has failed or not as i don't see any information in "/var/spool/mail/root" as well.

did you try using the mailx comand as well?

Sendmail creates logs when it does things. See if you spot anything interesting in wherever that is set up to log to; a good bet might be /var/log/sendmail.log or mail.log. Also check with mailq -- the message is probably still on hold in the queue, quite likely with an explanation of why (run with -v to see the full diagnostic, if I recall correctly).

@era, i tried , response got from mailq -v is

/var/spool/mqueue is empty
Total requests: 0
