Some points to pay attention to:
  • If you make changes in these files you have to source the file or logout and login again.
  • If you set the umask in /etc/profile it can then be overridden by the setting in the user's .profile.
  • For CDE logins, /etc/profile are NOT read by default. To read /etc/profile during a CDE login, make a link to /etc/profile in /etc/dt/config/Xsession.d.
IMHO it is a MUCH better idea and safer to create the file and use chmod rather than mess with the umask.

I'll repeat this slowly: An application such as touch internally does something like open (file, O_CREAT|O_RDWR, permissions) and typically the permissions are something like 0666. The umask can only subtract from the value specified in the open(), not add to it. See open(3): open file - Linux man page and various FAQs on the topic of "I want really wild permissions, why doesn't umask help".

Era is right, if you have a umask of 000, the execute part will be only affect on directories, files must be set manually.
