Hi,

They are maximum length of each column.
Ex
2 2 16 12 1
...
2 is max length of 2nd column
16 is max length of 3 rd column
12 is max length of 4th column
...

Thanks in advance

Code:
awk -F "|" '{ for(i=1; i<=NF; i++) if (length($i) > max[i]) max[i]=length($i); if (NF>n) n=NF; }
END { s=""; for (i=1; i<=n; ++i) { printf ("%s%i", s, max[i]); s=OFS; } printf("\n");}' a.txt

Incidentally, you don't need cat here at all, because awk can read a file directly.

Learning Perl ...
(sure there is a better (more elegant and less resource intensive) way)

Code:
perl -F'\|' -lane'
  %h = map {++$c => $h{$c} . " " . length} @F and $c = 0;
  print join " ", map {(sort {$a <=> $b} split / /, $h{$_})[-1]} sort {$a <=> $b} keys %h
    if eof
' a.txt

You can avoid the second sort if you use a simple regular array instead of a hash. The idea to sort the lengths and then print the leader is kind of neat, but only keeping the maximum saves memory.

Code:
perl -F'\|' -lane 'for ($c = 0; $c < @F; ++$c) { $l = length($F[$c]); $l[$c] = $l if $l[$c] < $l; }
   END { print join (" ", @l) }' a.txt

If you want to keep the sort idea, use an array of arrays.

Code:
perl -F'\|' -lane 'for ($c = 0; $c < @F; ++$c) { push @{$l[$c]}, length($F[$c]); }
   END { print join (" ", map { (sort @{$_})[0] } @l) }' a.txt

Yes, this already looks a lot like swearing.

Hi era,

Can you explain the below one

awk -F "|" '{ for(i=1; i<=NF; i++) if (length($i) > max[i]) max[i]=length($i); if (NF>n) n=NF; }
END { s=""; for (i=1; i<=n; ++i) { printf ("%s%i", s, max[i]); s=OFS; } printf("\n");}' a.txt

Thanks
Akil
