Error /etc/group problems

I have encountered a serious error in /etc/group. In some cases when i'm trying to read /etc/group, i read the first line and then if i press <ENTER> i can see the rest of the file. So, when i try a new installation and have a copy of the old /etc/group, and try to read and save it, it goes bye bye. I use Sco Openserver 5.0.5 and some technicians told me that it's a Unix bug....Is there a patch or something to correct it...?

I find it hard to believe there is a bug in /etc/group. It's an ascii file. If you were having a problem with it, you would have a problem with all ascii files.

1. These techs who told you it's a bug - UNIX techs?
2. When you wrote "I read the /etc/group", what do you use to 'read' it? An application, cat command, more, ...???
3. If you read /etc passwd (or some other ascii file) does it do the same type of thing (you see the first line, hit return, and see the rest of the file?

Found nothing on the following site for bugs with /etc/group.

Dear psycho,

I don't think it is a bug... It could be a problem with your keyboard mapping...

In what case does it act normally? In what case does it act abnormally?

How are you viewing this file? With more/cat/vi? I am assuming that you are using more, since you are using the <enter> key.

Also, when you use the <enter> key, is this on a real computer keyboard? because some <enter> keys on the numpad act differently than does the main <enter> key.

I typically only use cat or grep to look at lines in that file and the vipw for the /etc/passwd file.

I would recreate the /etc/group file and use a different method for viewing it.
