tar:read error: unexpected EOF
I need archive data from some tar files. I use the command "tar xvf
filename". For about half of the files I get the error message

"tar:read error: unexpected EOF".

The number of bytes extracted comes very close to the size of the
tar file.

An example:

972434779 Jan 10 01:01 20080109-bkp.tar

"du -k" of the extracted directory gives me 949172.

Am I losing data?

Is there way to tell and if so how much?

Can I fix the tar file?

Is there another utility that I can use in place of tar?

try searching in the forum. for example, this one might help

Read error => Problem with input (*.tar) file
Unexpected EOF => file is truncated

did you ftp your tar file from another box, if so ensure you used binary file transfer.

If this is the case: you have downloaded this file from some box and it is not a file made by you, then you should verify that the file content is OK.
If you have correct (not truncated/corrupted) file on some box, then try the following on both machines:
sum file.tar
cksum file.tar
md5sum file.tar
sha1sum file.tar
All of the commands should give you similar output on both boxes
