I know pipelined processors have issues with interupts.... but why? And does the architecture of the CPU affect the kind of software that can run on it?

If someone could help me out that would be awsome. My boss came to me with this question and I can't find anything on the web helping me out. Thanx so much!!

A short answer to the interrupt issues for pipelined processors is
imprecise interruption problems arise when a pipelined processor has multiple multicycle functional units because instruction completion might be out of order. An early issued, long-running instruction might generate an interruption after the completion of several short-running instructions issued later, resulting in an imprecise interruption.

The CPU architecture does affect the software that can run
on it for many reasons but any reasonable explanation on
that topic would involve discussions on the pros and cons
of the various processor architectures themselves.

You can probably find many papers on these subjects at IEEE
and ACM (some for a fee) as well as Engineering and CS
departments at several Universities.
