ping -s....options??

Morning,

I have to set up some monotoring between 2 servers, basically we need to proove to the LAN team that we a loosing packets.

Is there any way with ping -s that you can specify how many packets you send? I thought there was but maybe not, we want to set up a while loop that echos the date to a file does a ping -s for say 10 packets, that way we can pin point exactly what time etc we are loosing packets.... Trouble is ping -s requires ^C

Hope that makes sense! BTW Sol10.

ping -s <host> 56 4 will ping with 4 standard packets.

Simply reading a manual page can learn you so much :-) here is a link to the ping man file.

There are also lots and lots of network test tools you could use... maybe you should do a search for them on google......

Regards,
Johan Louwers.

Better do a packet trace on your network. Either snoop or tcpdump, depending on or Unix type.

Look for Duplicate ACKS and retransmissions.

They give you a better indication about whether there is packet loss.

I am just beginning to learn unix and I was wondering if there was a list of all the options somewhere on the net or hidden in the man pages? Also do options always have - and then a letter, or can it be - and a number as well? Thanks! (1 Reply)
