Please Help!! Reading a string of text with concurrent spaces into a shell variable

Please Help!!

Here is a very simplistic example of what I am trying to accomplish.

I need what I have inbetween the quotes to be read into the shell variable.

x="This is fun"
echo $x

The results of x from the above expression is:
This is fun

Notice the unix takes out the spaces when they occur back to back.

How do a get Unix to leaves the spaces as they are and give me the desired output of

This is fun

I have tried single quotes and also escape characters etc to no avail.

Please Help.

You should use the vB code tags because "This is fun" doesn't look any different no matter how you typed it.

Put double quotes around $x
Code:
echo "$x"

Single quotes, by the way, will treat $x as a string literal.
