which means, it has to be downloaded some where before unzipping or zipping it, for which instead of doing it in the local server it could be very well done in the required server, I don't think downloaded big files from unix servers are a problem

with bin mode transfer of properly created zipped files, unzipping should be really possible

I don't believe the standard Windows zip folder tool works on .gz files but I'm 99.9% certain the (free open source) windows utility 7zip can handle them.
