Why don't you try GNU find-utils?

I would suggest slocate (http://slocate.trakker.ca/). It's like locate, but when a user runs it, they only see file in which they'd normally have access (i.e. they won't typically even see that there's a large number of JPEGs in a hidden directory withing /root).

Make sure to read the documentation, because you'll want to avoid running this over NFS or SMB, or other special filesystems (like procfs, sysfs, or clustered filesystems.) This is usually defined in a central config location, like /etc/updatedb.conf.

find-utils are a set of GNU tools just for that: find things. Smilie
As other GNU sw, you have source code available. Anyway, there are binaries for various OS.

Look at: http://www.gnu.org/software/findutils/
