CPU Utilization

On user complains about the performance of web application, as a part application support, we use following commands to see the CPU utilization in the UNIX using ‘sar' command. Some times it goes below 20 and even reaches 0.

HLW$~> sar -u 10 60

SunOS HLW 5.8 Generic_117350-14 sun4u 05/18/06

13:48:51 %usr %sys %wio %idle
13:49:01 80 5 0 16
13:49:11 72 6 0 22
13:49:21 84 5 0 11
13:49:31 78 4 0 18
13:49:41 71 5 0 24
13:49:51 71 5 0 23
13:50:01 82 6 0 11
13:50:11 84 8 0 8
13:50:21 90 10 0 0
13:50:31 92 7 0 1
13:50:41 86 4 0 11
13:50:51 94 6 0 0
13:51:01 82 3 0 15

Is there anyway to find which process or thread blocking the CPU and RAM? Could we identify which process is blocking this and why it is blocking (I mean which activity is blocking)?

You can use prstat on Solaris 8 and above - works like top. Should show the processes taking up the cpu/memory - see prstat man page for more info.

Thanks for your reply.

When I use prstat -s size -n 5 to find this the process id 15643 (one of the weblogic node) utlizes 65%. But I was able to find out which activity or thread utilizing this. Can we still drill down to find out this? Please see the result.
