As rabttel explained, creating an image on DVD takes anything between 3-8 hours (depending on the size of image).

If you have another vg with free space you can create mkcd directory in that and point it there during mkdvd setup.

Dear ibmtech,

Are you saying that you can create & mount /mkcd/cd_fs and /mkcd/cd_images in advance in a volume group of your choosing if there is not enough space in rootvg?

I've never tried it, but I presume that you need approximately 25% extra in each from the size of your mksysb image, hence with mine at just over 2Gb means it creates two 2.5Gb temporary filesystems.

If you can confirm this, that's great. Smilie

I do try to keep rootvg clear, but sometimes you get stuck or inherit something that would make it a problem. Smilie

Thanks, in advance,
Robin

1st thing 1st, I misspelled your name in the previous post and sorry for that!
I am thinking that you are creating a new mksysb when you execute mkdvd command.

I ran mkdvd on many occasions, but I always select 'yes' for "Use an existing mksysb image", My mksysb goes to a particular filesystem on the local host.

Now coming to the actual menu, (partial output is pasted below)
Code:
DVD-R or DVD-RAM Device [] +
* Location of existing mksysb image [Location of my mksysb on local host] /

File system to store DVD file structure [Here I specify the mkcd directory] /
     (If blank, the file system
       will be created for you.)

File system to store final DVD images [Here I specify the mkcd directory] /
     (If blank, the file system
       will be created for you.)

If file systems are being created:

Note: I have selected
ISO9660 (CD format)

Excellent. This leads me through to the -V flag on the mkdvd command.
This specifies a volume group with sufficent space, or you can nominate existing mounted filesystems with -C & -I
Lots more options on the manual page for mkdvd so you can script/automate this as required rather than fill in the smit panels each time.

Well, I'm chuffed to have learned something new! Thanks ibmtech!
