Thank you.. it did work..
when i used the same as below

date=2013-01-03
awk '$1 > "$date"' a.txt > a1.txt

it doesnt give the desired output. The date is not getting replace

You have to define an awk variable using shell variable and use that instead:

date="2013-01-03"
awk -v D="$date" '$1 > D' a.txt > a1.txt

# 10
