HP [Solved] Problem with renaming files
I have about 1000 files containing the character * in the name. I need to find these files and replace the * with a -. I am working with HP UX v11. I am using the following command

find . -type f -name '*\**' -exec bash -c 'f="$1"; mv "$f" "${f//\*/-}"' - '{}' \

People tell me it works for them but for me it renames the complete file to - instead of replacing the *. Any help would be much appreciated.

Maybe you can try using the find command in a for loop and rename the files that way:

for i in $(find . -type f -name '*\**');do mv -vv "$i" "${i/\*/-}";done

# 3

With for the shell must store the 1000 pathnames in a list.
And a space-separated list has a problem with pathnames that have spaces.
Better use while!

find . -type f -name '*\**' |
while read f
do
  mv "$f" "${f//\*/-}"
done

# 4

Originally my bash was version 2.04 after upgrading to version 4.2 the original command is now working. Thank you for your support!

Oh, you are right!
Tested with bash 2.05:
it treats ${f//\*/-} like ${f//*/-}
Fixed since bash 3.00
