Question Capturing sendmail success/failure?

I am working on a project that will use sendmail to send reports form a shell script. Since these reports are very important and go out at all times of the day, I need to be able to capture if sendmail is unsuccessful or errors out. The emails may have multiple recipients with multiple attachments.

In simplified form, I am using the format below to initiate the command from the shell script:

(mail information: to, from, subject, attachments, etc) | /usr/lib/sendmail -t

Any suggestions would help, as this is the only piece of the process that I have not been able to get working.

Thanks

sendmail uses a flag -Ndsn (delivery status notification) you can use that to determine if the mail was delivered successfully or it failed or there is a delay in delivery. see man page for sendmail for more details

I have added the Delivery Status Notification tag to my code:

(...) | /usr/lib/sendmail -t -N success,delay,failure

I have not been able to find any documentation on retrieving and using the DSN, where does it go? Smilie
I know it is not in the main mail.log file, which wouldn't help me anyway as it is a huge file to attempt to parse.

This solution looks like it should work for me, if I can find out how to access the DSN.
