it is not space.

its the ascii value of 240 (Hypen)

try the below command.

take a backup of your file and issue the below commands.

Code:

cp input.txt input.txt.bk
tr -cd '\240' < input.txt > output.txt

can you try this

the below code is to remove the non-printing characters

Code:

perl -lane '$_=~ tr/\x20-\x7f//cd;print $_' input.txt > output.txt

Code:
tr -sc '[:print:]\n' ' ' <input.txt >output.txt

This will replace any succession of non-printable caracter (including the \240) by a single space (\040) .

Code:
# printf "a\240\240\240\240\t\040\040 a\n"
a a
# printf "a\240\240\240\240\t\040\040 a\n" | od -bc
0000000 141 240 240 240 240 011 040 040 040 040 141 012
          a 240 240 240 240 \t a \n
0000014
# printf "a\240\240\240\240\t\040\040 a\n" | tr -sc '[:print:]\n' ' '
a a
# printf "a\240\240\240\240\t\040\040 a\n" | tr -sc '[:print:]\n' ' ' | od -bc
0000000 141 040 141 012
          a a \n

You should remove the -c option.

But instead of deleting it you may want to replace it.

Code:
tr -s '\240' ' ' <input.txt >output.txt

or more generic :

Code:
tr -s '\240[:blank:]' ' ' <input.txt >output.txt

This should do the work
