Power /etc/adjtime

I have a query regarding /etc/adjtime file.

We had an issue, where our system time was drifting.
We fixed this issue by changing Local to UTC in that file.

How will this change impact our system?
How does this fix the problem?

Probably better to investigate using Network Time Protocol. The deamon ntpd or xntpd will have to be enabled and you will need a time source available to follow. Probably best to use a reliable one that listens to an internet based atomic clock or reference to that.

If we knew which OS you have, someone may be able to provide further help, but read the man pages for the above and ntp.conf

I hope that this helps,

Changing /etc/adjtime won't fix the clock being off by n minutes, it'll put your computer in a different time zone.

I suspect he set it to UTC so he could set the clock using NTP. Most servers set their clocks to UTC, and network time is always UTC, so it's convenient. Then he probably adjusted other settings so that programs would still use your local time zone, by adding an offset to the UTC system time.

How this is done depends on your system.
