Getting machine info in C

I need to find a way to query the OS (on Linux or Unix) to get details about the host machines processor type and the primary hard drive serial number. Is this possible?

Thank you for any Guru help you can provide!

In Linux, getting CPU info is easy:
Code:
int fd=open("/proc/cpuinfo", O_RDONLY);
read(...);

As for "primary hard drive" -- what does that even mean now that drives don't come in master/slave pairs? But you can explore quite a lot of Linux device information under /sys/.

Code:
for DEV in /sys/block/*
do
        [ -e "${DEV}/device/model" ] &&
                echo ${DEV}:`cat ${DEV}/device/model`
done

for DEV in /sys/class/net/eth* /sys/class/net/wlan*
do
        [ -d "$DEV" ] || continue
        echo ${DEV}: `cat ${DEV}/address`
done

Code:
/sys/block/sda:TOSHIBA MK3252GS
/sys/block/sdb:Multi-Card
/sys/block/sr0:CDDVDW TS-L633L
/sys/class/net/eth0: 00:23:8b:62:11:cf
/sys/class/net/eth1: 00:21:00:a5:99:05
