high number of comm_waits for a TSM backup

Hi Guys,

I wonder if someone has come accross an issue where basically our db2 backups are running very slow and one thing that we can see from the TSM report below is that the number of comm_waits has increased dramatically. We asked the question to IBM about what comm_waits would means but according to them even the meaning is quite vague which I found a bit surprising. Please if anyone has a good idea of what the comm_waits means and what sort of actions we should follow to find the root cause of the slow backup. We are running aix 5.3 and tsm tdp client for the database backups. Thanks.

Do the box have bottlenecks on resources like CPU, RAM or disk and network I/O at that time (client and/or TSM server)? Is the db2 busy with something else at the time of the backups? Is there any noticeable network problem like increasing error counters on switches where those boxes are attached?

Maybe an additional post at myadsm.org might be helpful.

nope the box is quiet at the time of the backup. There is a dedicated netwlork link between the database server and the tsm server and doesn't seems to reach more thatn 205 of its capacity.

My knowledge about TSM reaches only back to version 5.2 - does the activity log show a bit more of evidence to the problem?
Way back in time I only had good experience with TSM support from IBM - maybe you try it again hopefully getting a support member that is a bit more tenacious in trying to solve the problem.

Did you open a thread on http://myadsm.org ? I really recommend this.

Hi,

Actually IBM came back saying there was a network congestion then we found that on our TSM server we have 4 ethernet adapter attach to it and 1 of them was off . We are planning to get that link back on and hopefully the congestion will go aaway. Thanks again for your reply.
