Bash shell: Cutting pasting only parts of the name of a directory into a variable

I have a script in a directory and want to search the directory before like follows:

Code:
i=0
for file in ../HN_*
do
  echo $file
  ((i+=1))
  echo $i
done

Currently I get following output:

Code:
../HN_2
1
../HN_3
2

but I want my output to be:

Code:
HN_2
1
HN_3
2

Changing the code to the following would be easy:
Code:
i=0
cd ..
for file in HN_*
do
  echo $file
  ((i+=1))
  echo $i
done

Generates
Code:
HN_2
1
HN_3
2

but causes other problems in my code

But I can't do so. So although this works in that point, I must cut the resulting variable

How about this...

Code:
i=0
for file in HN_*
do
  f=$(echo $file | cut -d"/" -f2)
  ((i+=1))
  echo "$f \n $i"
done
