Autofs, doesn't mount anything

Hi,

I know that this is probably quite a tiresome issue, but I can't get autofs to work.

I'm using udev rules to create symbolic links below /dev, that always point to the same devices regardless of which port they're plugged in. So, autofs's config files look like this for me:

/etc/auto.master:
Quote:
/media/auto /etc/auto.misc --timeout=60
and /etc/auto.misc:
Quote:
usb-stick -fstype=vfat,users,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=007 :/dev/usb-stick
ext-fp1 -fstype=ntfs-3g,users,uid=1000,gid=100,umask=007 :/dev/ext-fp1
ext-fp2 -fstype=ntfs-3g,users,uid=1000,gid=100,umask=007 :/dev/ext-fp2
The both ext-fp? are my external hard drives.

Running "service autofs start ; service autofs status" does start the service (I can tell by looking at "service --status-all"), but in the second command's output there are no entries under "Active Mount Points".
Trying to access the directories where my drives are supposed to be mounted gives me an error message:
Quote:
Transport endpoint is not connected
Can anybody help me out?

PS: As a thank-you, I would summarize my experience in a small guide about making device access (also with the NTFS file system) more comfortable under Linux. Guess that still is pretty common problem.
