Question Kernel Question

Hello,

I am reading a book during my leisure time and it has the following question which I cannot find in the book:

-How are data transferred between a process and the kernel? What alternatives are available?

If you could provide some feed back it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

1. system calls (section 2 of the man pages)
2. read() and write() system calls via File/device IO
3. ioctl (it's a special system call on an IO handle which is usually meant for "meta" information to the device driver, and thus, not to the actual device)
4. Reading/writing to shared memory areas, such as video buffers. Theoretically this can be done, but it's not, unless through a system call or a device.
