login & password

I bought a pentium 2 (office auction) for my country home. When I turned it on it had Unix. It asks me for a login and password. I don't have these and since I don't know Unix I want to reformat the drive or at least be able to install Windows. I can't get past the Login and password promt. Anyone know how I can either reformat or install Windows on this computer?

When you buy windows, it will come with installation instructions. Read them and follow them. That will take care of this. During installion, you will boot from the installation CD rather than your hard drive. The os currently on the hard drive will not matter.

I tried that but it won't boot from the disk.

Then you have a windows installation issue.

And we don't do windows. Smilie

Why would it be a Windows installation issue if all I can do is enter something where it asks for a login and password? It won't boot from the CD Rom. Is there not a way to bypass the login and password?

Because the installation of an operating system has nothing at all to do with what, if anything, may be on the hard disk.

Your hard disk could be factory fresh with absolutely nothing on it at all and you should be able to install windows. That actually happens all the time.

If you are looking at a login screen that was painted by your unix that is sitting on your hard drive, then you simply have booted from that hard drive rather than booting from the cd.

I would guess that you attempted to boot from the cd, had some problem, and so you booted from the hard drive instead. But that is only a guess.

If you find a windows expert who can install windows, I promise you that he will not the help of a unix expert to overwrite your old unix installation.

Also, what do you think you might do if you logged on to the unix system? Do you think that you will find a unix command to overlay unix with windows?

Your best bet is to post your question on a windows forum somewhere, but I will say what I think is happening...Your computer is configured to boot off the hard drive first, then to boot off the CDROM. So when you turn it on, it checks to see if you have an operating system on your hard drive, which you do (unix/linux). It never bothers to check the CDROM after that. What you will probably need to do is to go into the BIOS and switch the order in which the computer checks your drives to have it check the CDROM first. Again, I suggest you post in a windows forum somewhere, and make sure to include as much information as possible (manufacturer, model num, etc.). Good luck!
