Sed problem

Hi,

I tried the following

sed -n '/one/p' file1

I need to understand, is it possible to search pattern irrespective of case.

Thanks,
Shahnaz.

Some sed implementations (GNU sed for instance) support the I modifier which matches a regex in a case-insensitive manner:

Code:
% sed -n '/yes/Ip'<<!
no
YeS
no
!
YeS

Otherwise you could use character classes:

Code:
% sed -n '/[Yy][Ee][Ss]/p'<<!
no
YeS
no
!
YeS

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I don't think so my sed version fit in GNU.

Whe I try like

sed -n '/smith/Ip' emp

Unrecognized command: /smith/Ip

I think I need to stick with character class, but it is very difficult for me if I search long pattern.

Do we have anything to rid out of this burden?

Hope GNU version sedn under Linux, do we have any UNIX flovour which houses GNU sed? or Is it possible to download this version?

Thanks,
Shahnaz.

Check the FAQ.

You can install/compile a free version. Check this url.

And I suppose you need to perform more complex operations,
the one you mentioned can be performed by most (all?) versions of grep.

Why not with awk?

Code:
awk 'tolower($0) ~ "one"' file
