Enterprise 450 Solaris 9 Problems

I am just getting started loading an Enterprise 450 Dell with Solaris 9 however I cannot get out of a loop that is not letting me get started.

My basic question is what are the key strokes to get you out of a boot sequence so that you can at least clear the hard drive or start an install

Thanks

Hmmm....sounds like a job for Tom's Root Boot. Here is a Link . Great for repair work...just download the program and create a Toms Root disk, put it into your drive and boot. The disk will basically boot up your system, give you a command prompt in which to mount any drive you need. fix your errors then boot the system back up. Its also great if you lost your root passwd as it will allow you to gain access wihtout it (also points out the importance of physical security)

Joe7778, you have so far opened three threads on this issue. I have closed the other two threads. Do not open any more.

The exact sequence of events that is required to install the OS will depend very heavily on what system you are using. And you need to supply us with some accurate information.

I tend to doubt that there is any such thing as a "Enterprise 450 Dell". Are you very sure that you have one? Sun makes a box called an "Enterprise 450". Are you sure that you don't have a Sun Enterprise 450?

If you really have a Dell box, you need to look at the owner's manual to see how to put the PC into setup mode. This typically involves pressing a key during power on. All of Dell's owner's manuals are available on Dell's web site. Once you are in setup mode, you need to alter the boot sequence. Again this varies with the Bios that you have. It is very possible that you cannot arrange to boot from your cd-rom. For example, my Dell cannot boot from a USB device. If I only had a USB CD-ROM, I would be in trouble.

if you are useing an x86 system(ie: dell) solaris has a boot cd/floppy.

you put the disk/cd in and boot. then go thru the install.

if you are useing sparc goto the ok prompt and type boot cdrom. then go on w/ the install through there.

If you are using SUN hardware (Ultra Enterprise 450) you can send it a break by using the Stop and A key together (if break is not disabled) on a SUN keyboard. If using a p.c. style keyboard, use the break key.

Thanks

Thanks for everyones responses. Deamon you are correct I am not using a Dell, it is a Sun SparcII I was mistaken due to the fact is was is sitting right next to a Dell and the person who pointed the server out to me pointed out the wrong one.

I will take the advice of creating the boot disk, it seems as if my keyboard isn't working. I have tried the stop A and various other and it is unresponsive.

Once again, thanks,
Sorry for the multiple threads, I didn't know that was a mortal sin. Smilie

Anyway, I will be loading this system over the next week or so and am glad that I found some competent advice on line. Getting help from Sun is like getting help from Microsoft. It would be easier to chew your leg off.

Forget the boot disk. That advice was given by someone who thought you had a pc.

You need to get to the ok prompt. The exact sequence required depends on the configuration of your box. But Stop-A or break should be the key.

Describe in detail what keyboard you are typing on. And also describe the monitor where you read what you type. We need to know if you have a graphic display or an ascii terminal.

On the keyboard: is there a key labelled "stop"? Is there a key labelled "break" or "brk"?
