Post what type of system and OS (and version), please.

If this is a SUN system, then the card needs specific software loaded for it to work.

Problem #2

In addition, if the client was installed from an OS Service that did
not include OEM support, the system may not have the proper packages
to run OpenWindows or CDE. The symptom of this problem is an error
message similar the following, when attempting to start a windowing
system:

/dev/fb: No such file or directory
Graphics Adapter device /dev/fb is of unknown type

Fatal server error:
InitOutput: Error loading module for /dev/fb

Resolution Top

In order to avoid the above stated problems, the following
recommendations for client configuration must be applied:

1. The easiest solution is to remove the OS Service. Then readd the
OS Service selecting the "Entire Distribution + OEM" as the
cluster type. The Entire Distribution + OEM cluster
will install all the required packages. This is more convenient
than adding individual packages especially if more clients are
going to be added at a later date.

2. For each affected 2.5.1 HW11/97 Autoclient or Diskless Client, add
the following packages:

SUNWevc.u SUNWffb.u SUNWhmd SUNWide
SUNWm64.u SUNWpci.u SUNWpd SUNWvplr.u
Also, install patch 105428-01 to each client from the server to correct
the boot problem.

3. For each affected 2.6 HW 3/98 or 5/98 Autoclient or Diskless Client,
add the following packages:

SUNWafb.u SUNWafbr SUNWffb.u SUNWhmd
SUNWide SUNWm64.u SUNWpci.u SUNWpd
SUNWw250.u SUNWvplr.u SUNWxfb.u

Also, install patch 105654-03 to each client from the server to correct
the boot problem.

4. To provide windowing support for new framebuffers (AFB, FFB, and M64),
add the following packages:

SUNWvplu.u SUNWvplxw SUNWafbcf SUNWafbw
SUNWafbxg SUNWffbcf SUNWffbw SUNWffbxg
SUNWm64w SUNWm64cf

Note: Reference the Comments section below for important information
on where to find packages and patches on your OS CD and on applying
patches.

For instructions on how to add packages in a Client/Server
environment, reference InfoDoc 21447.

COMMENTS:

1. On the Solaris 2.5.1 HW11/97 CD all packages referenced above are
in the /cdrom/cdrom0/s0/Solaris_2.5.1 directory.

2. On the Solaris 2.6 HW3/98 and HW5/98 CDs all packages referenced
above are in the /cdrom/cdrom0/s0/Solaris_2.6/Product directory.

3. The Solaris 2.6 HW3/98 and HW5/98 CDs contain patch 105654-03 in
the /cdrom/cdrom0/s0/Solaris_2.6/Patches/105654-03 directory.

4. The Solaris 2.5.1 HW 11/97 CD contains patch 105428-01 in the
/cdrom/cdrom0/s0/Solaris_2.5.1/Patches/105428-01 directory.

5. To apply a patch from the server to an Autoclient or Diskless client:
Refer to the patch install instructions.
Another problem may be ...

check the permissions of /usr/bin/login.

# ls -l /usr/bin/login

Make sure they are:

-r-sr-xr-x 1 root bin 29292 Oct 6 1998 /usr/bin/login

If the permissions are incorrect, issue the following command:

# chmod 4555 /usr/bin/login

Thanks RTM for your reply,
This system has been operational already and this is our server which all packages plus OEM support had been installed on that ,but due to a power failure problem we sent it for servicing & after returning this problem observes.
As this system is very critical i can not reinitialize anything from scratch & i should troubleshoot.

The OS version is solaris8 on U60 machine.

i should ,mention also that "ffbconfig" also did not work as it couldn't open /dev/fb.
but "afbconfig" that is for another card on this system works & gives the proper output.

for /sur/bin/login perm i'll check it tomorrow as the system is in client side but if it was not the case what should i do.

You can check out patch 108528 on Sunsolve but I really have to wonder...

1. If you had a power problem, could the card have been fried?
2. Whoever was suppose to fix it should be responsible for fixing all of it.

I would be wondering what kind of company didn't check out the server completely before giving it back to you. If you have (extensive) documentation on how the server was set up before it had the power failure, I would check that the server is set up the same way. Would also check that the server has the same serial number.
