New FreeBSD User....Xwindows Problem

Hi, would anybody kindly help me as I am new in FreeBSD 4.4 (downloaded iso image from FreeBSD.org) and have installed it to an HP VEctra Pentium 1-166Mhz PC, have installled all the devices mouse, video card, monitor and some ports specifically to Xfree86 and all gnome related to "X" but when I type in "startX" to execute Xwindows it gives me the error "server kill" any possible scenarios or steps to take to rectify this.

Thanks in advance.

Are you using XFree86 3.x or XFree86 4.x?

The configuration method is different between the two.

Okidokie.

One of the big things is to get the proper video card selected for XFree86.

Check out this link from the FreeBSD Handbook. It contains the proper procedure to get XFree86 4.x setup:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO.../x-config.html

The FreeBSD Handbook is an excellent resource and well written.
