squid2 or squid3 ?

hi

I've squid version 2.6.STABLE5 installed on Pentium P4, 2.0 Ghz, 2 GB RAM with Debian Etch stable for 200 users.

has squid3 more performance than squid2 ?

should I migrate to squid 3 ?

what's your experience and opinion about squid 3 ?

hi ccc,

IMHO - if we are talking about stability - we are not just talking about the application itself, especially networking applications. probably a comparison of 60-65% hardware performance and 40-35% the application itself.

the application (such as squid) representing software features - its ability to do certain functions - its tunable parameters, but will not meet againts hardware quality/capacity.

if you already satisfied with squid 2.6 (its features met your requirements) performance - i think that will be enough. otherwise, feel free to upgrade Smilie

just my opinion,

HTH.

They did make improvements in 3- Squid 3.0 release notes
But the best thing to do is set up a test system. vmware works well for this purpose. Test in a lab before going into production. You can also just upgrade 1 machine and measure performance before upgrading more.

thx, I'll try but do I need better, stronger hardware for squid3?

I'm running squid 2 on Dell Optiplex GX260 2GHz, 2GB RAM for 150 users.
