If your senior programmer doesn't know much about systems and he has the root password, I suggest you use the command passwd to change the root password.

Then, set up sudo for that user so they have a list of defined commands they can execute as a super user.

else, I suggest that you alias the command su to something else that echos a warning to the user.

then run the su command as a different name. You NEVER want to re-engineer security around a user who should not have privileges in the first place. Root is not "the boss" he is god on that machine. He can instruct the machine to destroy itself (software wise). Cleaning up those messes will not be fun.

Hi, Is it possible to stop users from copying a login shell, say bash, to another name and then executing it via sudo to gain root priviliges? Normal users have read access to login shells, so they can copy them without any limitations. How can I stop this? Thanks (12 Replies)

NAME

       mtail - tail variant designed for web developers monitoring logfiles

SYNOPSIS

       mtail [options]	<file>...

DESCRIPTION

       MonkeyTail  allows  a  user to tail multiple files on both local and remote hosts and clearly marks inactivity by putting 5 newlines in the
       output whenever a pause in output over 3 seconds is detected.

       MonkeyTail is implemented a fairly simple wrapper script around standard tail, ssh, and sudo.

OPTIONS

       -q     Quiet mode

       --quiet
	      "    "

       -n     Output the last N lines of each file before tailing (defaults to 0)

       <file>...
	      Files to tail.

	      These can specified in the following ways:

       @<groupname>
	      - expands the group (from .mtailrc) to a list of

	      files to tail

       <filename>
	      - tails a local file.

       +<filename>		- attempts to sudo and tail a local file (will
	      prompt for pwd if required).

       <remotehost>:<filename>
	      - attempts to invoke tail via ssh on a remote

	      host.

       +<remotehost>:<filename> - attempts to invoke sudo tail via ssh on a
	      remote host (will prompt for pwd if required).
