After upgrading from 14 LTS to 16 LTS the system started getting these hard lockups, where nothing works, can't get to it through ssh, or console.
I have asked for help on Launchpad Ubuntu forum, but so far no replies.
in /var/log/kern.log:
with some more debug dump info.
I re-run memtest and it was OK.
What should I post to get help?
My system is stock DELL XPS 8700 with I7-4790. nothing special about this h/w.
I hope I won't have to revert back to 14.04, as I did have issues with kbd/mouse dead after booting. In 16.04 this problem is gone, but the lockups are even worse. Some day system runs for hours with no problems, then it would lock up within an hour after boot while just reading email.
Any pointers are appreciated.

Reason: Add CODE and ICODE tags.
You might see if you can bring it up on command line only mode and see if you can do something to get it to lock up. It could be that either the video or sound drivers are having an issue. I would say that video driver is more likely. You can also try fscking the root volume.
any pointers on how to bring it up without X server (graphical UI)?

Yes, I understand that I show very little info, but I don't know what should I show, I was asking about it in my post - what can I show here to get help?

Per your suggestion, I brought system up, switched to console tty1 and stopped lightdm service. Then I just left system on overnight and in the morning I saw many soft lock up messages on the console. I tried sudo reboot, but it got locked and did not work, see log below:
Aug 13 10:01:30 XPS-8700 kernel: [40741.481197] NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#5 stuck for 22s! [reboot:4965]
I am not sure if stopping lightdm service was enough for this experiment. Any suggestions, please?
How much RAM do you have? Could it be that you are getting a kernel panic from not having enough memory, or having an undersized swap space? If you have 4GB or less of RAM it would not hurt to up the memory. 16GB of RAM would not be unreasonable.
2 GB RAM is certainly enough for stability (but maybe not for speed).
I rather suspect that one of the listed kernel modules is not part of the LTS distro, and should be updated for the new kernel.

I received a dual core PC with Windows 7 free from my work. It had 2GB of RAM and was terribly slow. I bought a 4GB video card and 4-4GB DDR3 DIMMS and it preforms OK. I may never use 16GB of RAM, but I know my PC will never have to swap. It never hurts to buy extra memory, since modern browsers can use gigabytes of RAM just to cache web pages. Whether you are running Windows or Linux, you will probably use a browser that will suck up as much memory as it can. ;-)
I should have mentioned that I am running Ubuntu 16.04 on an I3 HP laptop with 12GB of RAM. I needed to install the Chrome browser, Flash control and disable the embeded flash control that came with the OS. It seems to work well. I don't have any complaints other than streaming could have worked a little better from the base install.
Hello All,

Hi,
In order to have a sand box machine that I could use to test some system changes before going to production state, I'd like to duplicate a working system to a virtual one. Ideally, I'd like to manage to do it this way :
- Make a full system backup excluding the user file system (this... (7 Replies)
