to answer both of your posts
you don't need the -v flag, it's for more detailed output of linux mail command, and mailx in solaris
if you want it, use
echo bla | mailx -v emailaddress

that means your shell could not find the svcs command in your path, set in PATH variable

your solaris is too old for svcs, or it's simply not in your path
check for sendmail in /etc/init.d
/etc/init.d/sendmail start
