Solaris

Hello,

I'm searching for a sun server with solaris 10 OS to be used for backup ,the server will hold .tar backups from different servers ,size of backups will not be more than 90GB ,I need your suggestions for suitable server with acceptable price since I have a little experience with SUN hardware,,,,,

For small backups of that size pretty much anything will do whether SPARC or x86. If x86 it doesn't even need to be a Sun box. I would look at a SATA disk x86 system if you want on-disk backups.

Sun Fire V215, Sun Fire V240, Sun Fire V440, Sun Fire V280..etc

all these small servers are suitable. X86 servers will do, I recommend Sun Fire X4100, but I'm not big fan of Sun's X86/X64 systems to be honest.

mm00123 - you can always check the sun hardware compatibility list or HCL on sun.com for Solaris 10 x86. This will give you a really good idea what type of hardware can work well or at least out of the box with solaris 10.

case in point, i went to tigerdirect.com, found an almost complete package deal for a motherboard, intel core duo, power supply, 1GB ram and fan for roughly $250 USD. i purchased about 500GB worth of SATA drives (2 drives) for about $100 USD. system runs x86 perfectly.
