loop

dears
im a new in DB feild and this is my first script, my OS Solaris ,
echo $SHELL > /bin/sh.

i have 8 dmp file,while exporting i need to compress the dmp1 when dmp2 is started, im reading from the log to know when dmp2 is started.
if the dmp2 not started sleep then check again.
i've written this script:

Code:
getf2=`grep "continuing export into file /fffffx05/ffffdmp/expmana.dmp" expmana_full.log1 |cut -c 47-60`

while true
do
if [ $getf2 -eq "expmana_f2.dmp" ];then
compress expmana_f1.dmp
echo "compress completed"
getf2="       "
else
sleep 100;
fi
done

the compress is working but if the dmp2 is not started its not going to sleep.
where is anything missing in this script.

thank you in advance..

-eq is for comparing numerical data, for comparing strings use =

Change this line to
Code:
if [ "$getf2" = "expmana_f2.dmp" ]; then

also, in your while loop where are you re-reading $getf2, as I read it now, if $getf2 doesn't pass the test, then this will keep looping round. You need to re-do the grep inside the loop as well.

thank you Mr.wempy for your help, if the getf2 is not found it will hung up till i cancel it, i need to go to sleep then check again if the file name is there or not.

getf2=`grep "continuing export into file /fffffx05/ffffdmp/expmana.dmp" expmana_full.log1 |cut -c 47-60`

while [ "$getf2" != " " ]
do
if [ "$getf2" = "expmana_f2.dmp" ];then
compress expmana_f1.dmp
echo "expmana_f1.dmp compress completed"
getf2=" ";
else
sleep 10;
getf2=`grep "continuing export into file /fffffx05/ffffdmp/expmana.dmp" expmana_full.log1 |cut -c 47-60`
fi
done
