Operating Systems Solaris slow access

Not entirely sure how to check the duplex/speed settings. Also our network guys feel that their switches are ok and that the settings should be as they were before the outage. They are a bit lost on the issue as well and are assuming something has happened to the sun machine. If the issue was with the Sun Box it would be effected when accessed from outside the local network as well correct?

checking duplex settings

I agree that it sounds like a problem autonegotiating on the switch. Check out the following link on using ndd to force a full duplex etc. Also, get the switch set to match. This would be the first place to look in my opinion.

Interesting findings here. Looks as if through all this our Network Folks changed their netmask. Now I am looking for the proper way to change on my Unix machine. I have changed IP before but not the netmask.

Netmasks

Add your network into /etc/netmasks. See man netmasks for more information.

netmasks exists in /etc but I cannot find a way to effect change. cannot vi the file as administrator or root. As for man netmasks it returns nothing.

What happens when you try to vi the netmasks file? This seems very unusual. Aslso tio change the nemask without rebooting, you will need to apply the change with ifconfig.

As for the autonegotitation qusetion, it is not uncommon for Sun servers to need to be forced to the correct speed and duplex settings irrespective of switch configuration, in particular with Cisco network equipment. The is a long standing argument between Sun and Cisco as to where the fault lies.

We have pretty much repaired our problem through some assigned ports to control speed and such as well as for the short term avoid the netmask issue. However given that I still need to make the change at some point in the not to distant future. When I vi the file it returns "new file". Does not matter if I am administrator or root. I have not experienced this before. The pain of it all......
