I wish to share my experience using "~" on a solaris box. I had once wanted to remove a file which created. when i saved the file using wq!, i accidentally typed wq~ . it created a file "~". I was in the root dir at that point and was working late and tired. When I issued rm -rf ~ , I noticed it took long so I ctrl+C to break it. I did a quick check that none of my system/app files were deleted. I tot nothing would had happen and I was wrong. A couple of days later, the system panicked and the root cause analysis showed that the filesystem got corrupted. It was a nightmare. So, use "rm" and "~" WITH CARE!!
