Unix Command

Hi All,

Can some one help me in providing the unix command to ignore the "" in a line. To explain in detail

I have a file which is space delimited.

Ex
1 2 3 4 "hello" "rock dude" 5 6 7

The output should look like below
1|2|3|4|"hello"|"rock dude"|5|6|7

when I use the below command the output is
sed -e 's/[ ]/|/g' samp
perl -i -pe 's/[ ]/|/g' samp

1|2|3|4|"hello"|"rock|dude"|5|6|7
where in between the string it gives a pipe symbol.

So I want to ignore the spaces with in the string (" ")? Hope my query is clear. Please help

Code:
sed -e 's/\([^" ]*\|"[^"]*"\) /\1|/g' samp

Sounds like you probably want to remove the double quotes after that, since they will no longer be required to disambiguate fields with spaces in their values.

It doesn't work with POSIX or Solaris sed.

It seems Gnu sed which isn't bundled yet with Solaris is required.

Data Unix Command

This doesnt work Smilie any other inputs...

Also one more thing to add..

I should have double codes with in the strings. As I said earlier.. the o/p should be like below

1|2|3|4|"hello"|"rock dude"|5|6|7

I tried your command it gives me no o/p
$ sed -e 's/\([^" ]*\|"[^"]*"\) /\1|/g' samp
1 2 3 4 "hello" "rock dude" 5 6 7

Pls help..

a bit long winded, but

Code:
sed -e 's/ /|/g' -e 's/\("[^"|][^"|]*\)|\([^|][^|]*|\)/\1 \2/g'

should work.
