what is /.<filename> mean??
Hi all,

i would like to know what is meant by /.<filename>
what is the use of /.

I know that /<filename> means the access to "filename" goes through root..
but how do you define this /.<filename>

Please be descriptive

That would mean filename starts with a dot, so is a "hidden" file in the root directory. Or perhaps are you confusing with ./<filename> which means that file in the current directory.

No No, its got nothing to do with confusion..
i was handling a script where i encountered such commands which had /.<filename> and some other operations being performed on it...

It was appearing far too many times in the script for me to just ignore it..
So thought i will shoot a question..

i'd like to have an alias (or something similar) where i can type a command like "archive" and a filename and have it tar and gzip the file, so... $ archive filename results in filename.tar.gz...do i have to write a script to do this? (4 Replies)
