GRUB/Solaris 10

When I boot up with the first install disk I get this error message...

ERROR:28 Selected item cannot fit into memory

I've read alot of information about this being a bug with the GRUB loader and several people's posts about getting around this by using Solaris Express instead.

Does anyone actually know an actual fix to this problem though?

Is this from the DVD or CD?

My machine has only 192Mb or RAM and I was able to install from an earlier set of sol10 CDs, rather than a later 606 release DVD.

This is from CD.

I am running an old IBM Netfinity 5000 Dual PIII 500 and 512MB of RAM. When I first tried I had 128MB, then again with 256MB, and now with 512MB. Would have saved money to search for this on the internet sooner.

Are there many differences between the version you run and the newer version? I would eventually like to get certified in Solaris.

The fundamentals certainly haven't changed. For most purposes even solaris-9 would give you a good grounding. Sunstudio11 still runs on 9.

I actually removed sol10 and installed sol9, it has about half the disk space requirements.

Hi, sorry to bump this thread, I am also getting this error, i'm trying to install Solaris 10 on a machine that:

- Is booting from a DVD (I burnt the image directly from the download)
- Already has Windows 2000 on it
- Has 198mb RAM
- P3 550 Mhz

I have also tried the check tool utility, but it also comes up with the same error, indicating that it is a problem with the burning of the DVD/CD which I know is not the case...

kernel /boot/multiboot kernel/unix -B install_media=cdrom
[Multiboot-elf, <0x1000000:0x13b07:0x12909>, shtab=0x1027258, entry=0x100000]
module /boot/x86,miniroot

Error 28 : Seletected item cannot fit into memory

Press any key to continue

Any help?

According to: Solaris Operating - System Requirements

"Absolute Minimum 128 MB (256 MB for x86-based systems)"

Try using a system which has at least the documented absolute minimum required memory.

you are absolutely correct, my apologies for this mistake, i should have checked, i made the obvious mistake of assuming that solaris would run on these specs.

i have a further problem with the installation which i will repost under a new thread.

thank you
