DST on Solaris 2.6/7

I have several servers that are outside the country and are running Solaris 6 mainly with a few Solaris 7 boxes here and there. Because of that, we need to schedule time to change the time on March 11th and again in April, October and November. At least until the customer decides it's time to upgrade. But about half the servers are outside the US borders.

Do these servers (GMT, SGT, and JST) need to be changed? Do servers outside the country but in a US like timezone get changed? We have a few servers in St. Thomas which are using the EST time zone. Are they following the US DST, no DST or are they following the old DST Smilie

Basically I can see from a logical standpoint that the ones outside the US entirely don't need to be changed. But the ones in St. Thomas (EST) are a big question. The systems are production with lots of bucks depending on them. I'd like to have a nice definitive source somewhere Smilie

Thanks.

Oh, and another question along the same lines.

If me as a user, has set up the TZ variable on the SGT server to point to MST (my current zone), how is that affected by the US DST change? Heck, how is it normally affected? I hadn't thought of this until just now. Honestly I don't think anyone's doing that but it's an interesting question.

solaris systems rely on /usr/share/lib/zoneinfo files which get updated through the DST patches. Once the patches are applied you are in DST 2007 compliance for what ever your systems time zone is set to.

According to IBM, the only countries affected:
  • Australia
  • Bermuda
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • United States

I will update this post as I try to find links to the actual laws...
Bermuda: TIME ZONE (SEASONAL VARIATION) ACT 2006

As for your question specificly about St. Thomas... It is part of the US, it is not listed as one of the exceptions to standard time zones, and it makes most of its money from tourists from the US mainland. I will go out on a limb and predict that it will follow the US Congress decision. But why not ask your people in St Thomas?
