send mail from UNIX
Hi

We have configured the mail server in our unix box. Still while trying to send mail it goes to dead letter.

We issued the command as

mailx -s "Hello" someone@somewhere.com

Note:

Is that required to reboot the server once the send mail is configured in the server.

OS Version : Sun Solaris 5.8

Please advice.

Hi,

Use "mutt" command for mailing. may be it will work.

Enable verbose output on the mail command so we can see more information on why it is failing:

mailx -v -s "Hello" someone@somewhere.com

Its not showing any results..Its keep on hanging!!!!

You need to pass it some information to be used for the body of the message. Try:

$ echo "Sending test message" | mailx -s "hello" someone@somewhere.com

If by configuring the mail server you mean you made your box a mailhost, and you are trying to send email outside your domain, you nned to add a relay in sendmail.cf (usually your company's mail server ) that can relay mail from your domain to any other.

You don't need to reboot a server . Just change the configuration and stop/start the application
