E450 CPU temperature 80 degree F

Hi all,

We are getting CPU warning temeratures sometimes and our server is shutdown at 80 degree F. We notice our server room temperature at 18 degree celcius . Our we have already cleaned dust from grills near CPU Fan . CPU fans are working (moving) . It is our experience that CPU temperatures internally really increase when these messages come .

Is this system architecture problem . What could be a permanent remedy .
I want to shoot an email to me when these messages are coming (from prtdiag -v OR cat /var/adm/messages |grep Temp|tail ) etc . Does anybody have any shell script for the same .

On our server sendmail is not configured . How can i do so from scratch . Any pointer a guide / doc would be very much appreciated .

PS - During restart of the server , we got the following message.
Disconnected command timeout for target 6.0 .

Further we added 2 cpu recently . Since then this CPU temperature issue has become more crucial .

Download and install sun explorer, then run an explorer when the first message appears.

For sendmail there a innumerable tutorial on the web if you search for them.

Is your E450 in a rack? are the ventilation fans working in the rack?

Or is the back of your E450 where the power cables located pushed against the wall? or under a table?

There should be space and free flowing air between the wall and the back of your E450 or any unix box or server.

E450 temperatures

reborg,
I think we have explorer installed . How do i get into details when the message first appears . Further we do not get any notifications when message first appears .

sprcguy,
Our E450 is not in a rack . It is indeed pushed against wall and under a table . We would rectify that situation .

Do u think that would permanently solve the problem . Further what if we put an external fan behind E450 ? Is that ok .

Thanks both of u for ur valuable response .

An E450 is quite old and usually out of support. In that I would refurbish the CPU modules by removing the heat sink from the CPUs and replace the heat-conductive paste with some modern high-tech like "MX-1 Thermal Compound" by Arctic Cooling.

hi sorry for the late reply.

If I'm not wrong an E450 normally comes with at least 2 if not 3 power supply units modules. These modules already have built in fans. If the box is pushed against the wall or under a table there will be no air circulation possible hence the temp in the box will go up.
