Memory Errors - Where to go Next

Hi there, I came in this morning to the following errror

Sep 23 00:04:53 my.machine.com unix: [ID 752700 kern.warning] WARNING: [AFT0] Sticky Softerror encountered on Memory Module J0202

Does anybody the next step i should go to to investigate this issue?

any help on this would be greatly appreciated

cheers

You could run explorer and send it off to SUN for investigation. You could count how many errors occurred by checking your /var/adm/messages (or appropriate file) and see if there are enough to be bothered (SUN usually has a less than 24 errors in 24 hours - no replacement policy). Either way, opening a ticket with SUN would be wise.

But doesnt a STICKY soft error mean that its an unrecoverable/permanent hardware issue with the stick ??

Soft errors are recoverable. Hard errors are not recoverable. With a soft error, the correct value can be recomputed and the correct value can then be written back to memory. If that write causes another soft error, you have a sticky soft error.

Like RTM says open a case with Sun. But Sun may balk at replacing the memory module for a single error. Scanning your error logs to see if you have other errors is always worthwhile. If you happen to see more errors, mention them to Sun.

Thanks Perderabo, I think my main concern is that it says sticky soft error !! and there is a slight conflict in that Sun say this

Quote:
Errors Categorized as Sticky

If, during the handling of a CE event, the Solaris software cannot correct the flipped
data bit in memory, it will label the event Sticky instead of Persistent. This
disposition is fundamentally different in that it is not consistent with naturally
occurring events. Rather, it is an indication of a hard fault. Any components that
have been diagnosed with a hard fault should be replaced as soon as possible.
